Trump Supporters Are Being Blindly Optimistic

Disclaimer: This article is not my original writing. Much of its content is based on material from Sally Shi, whose channel I have greatly appreciated since it was recommended to me a year ago by my Sunday school teacher, Truly.

Blind Optimism

Trump’s recent victory does not signal a return of faith—it marks the return of political conservatism. Without a true revival of Christian faith, this “Trump phenomenon” is nothing more than a final flicker before darkness.

Trump’s generation is likely the last to grow up under the influence of a Christian moral education. Whether they personally believe in Christ or not, they were at least exposed to remnants of Christian values in school. But the next generation has been entirely shaped by leftist ideology.

If Christians do not take this precious, hard-won moment to boldly proclaim our faith, we may never have another chance. This is very much like the era of King Josiah in the Old Testament: though the king was awakened, the people did not return to the Lord. As a result, the revival could not be sustained.

Who Supports Trump?

There are few people from the church among Trump’s supporters. Most come from the secular world—those who still retain common sense. Therefore, the Republican Party and Trump himself have, to some extent, had to form alliances with non-Christian or even pagan groups to build momentum.

History keeps repeating itself: to defeat Hitler, the Allies partnered with the Soviet Union—which was even more evil than Hitler himself. To combat Protestantism, the Catholic king of France allied with the Muslim empire.

History shows us that such alliances rarely end well. If the problem of faith is not addressed, then any so-called “righteous cause” is merely political maneuvering dressed in moral language.

The American Church: A Tragic Picture

Few churches in America today care about the return of conservative values. Many are busy flying rainbow flags, hosting family camps, or teaching people to “look only to the Kingdom of Heaven.” The church has no power to stir a return to faith among the people, nor does it challenge Caesar with the Word of God.

Most churches openly criticize Trump. Many theologians call Trump a “cult leader.” Others continue to teach theological error. And those few churches that do uphold sound doctrine often lack a clear political and historical vision.

It’s easy to criticize Trump and the Republican Party. What’s hard is for churches to lay down their pride and support them in principle. And that, sadly, is the norm for churches around the world today.

A True Return of Faith

As the Church, we must stop tearing each other down and start doing the hard work. We must encourage our pastors and spiritual leaders to rise up with strength and devotion for the true return of the Christian faith.

We must actively support courageous pastors, political leaders who speak out on our behalf, and lawmakers and governors who stand for biblical values. Everyone must take action, so that those fighting on the front lines do not stand alone.
