Daily Family Bible Study (34)
Christians Must Not Judge, Yet Must Discern Heresy
引言
Introduction
We believe that Christians must not judge others or love arguments. Yet the Bible also clearly teaches us to be rooted in God's Word, discern true doctrine from false teaching, guard against heresy, and courageously defend the faith.
Today many churches emphasize "Do not judge," but rarely teach, "Discern carefully."
As a result, many believers are zealous but lack discernment.
They are easily deceived by false teachers, false prophets, and heresies.
The Reformed faith has always emphasized that true love must be built upon truth.
True peace is not abandoning truth, but loving one another in the truth.
I. Christians Must Not Judge Others Rashly
Luke 6:37 (NCV)
"Do not judge others, and God will not judge you. Do not condemn others, and you will not be condemned. Forgive others, and you will be forgiven."
Explanation
Here, "Do not judge" does not forbid every kind of judgment.
Jesus forbids proud, self-righteous, and malicious condemnation of others.
This means placing ourselves in the position of God as Judge.
The Bible does not forbid spiritual discernment.
Instead, it commands us to judge truth and error according to God's Word.
Matthew 18:15-20 (NCV)
"If your fellow believer sins against you, go and tell him what he did wrong. Do this when you are alone together. If he listens to you, you have helped that believer to be your brother or sister again.
But if he refuses to listen, take one or two others with you so that every word may be confirmed by the testimony of two or three witnesses.
If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. If he refuses to listen even to the church, treat him as you would treat a pagan or a tax collector.
I tell you the truth, whatever you don't allow on earth will be the same as what is not allowed in heaven, and whatever you allow on earth will be the same as what is allowed in heaven.
Also, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree to ask God for something in prayer, my Father in heaven will give it to you.
For where two or three are gathered together in my name, I am there with them."
Explanation
This passage shows that Jesus did not abolish judgment.
If the church could never judge, it could never identify sin.
Without discernment, church discipline would be impossible.
Therefore, the Bible opposes self-righteous condemnation, not biblical discernment.
A truly spiritual person humbly corrects a brother according to Scripture, rather than criticizing others based on personal preference.
Reformed Teaching
John Calvin wrote, "Christ forbids proud judgment arising from the human heart, not the church's spiritual judgment according to God's Word."
The Westminster Confession likewise teaches that the church must exercise admonition and discipline to preserve holiness and purity.
True love does not tolerate sin but seeks a brother's restoration through the truth.
