A Hundredfold in This Life and Eternal Life

2026-08-08
“A Hundredfold in This Life, and Eternal Life in the Age to Come” — A Reformed Explanation

This saying is very important, but it is also easily misunderstood by prosperity theology.

From a Reformed perspective, Jesus is not promising, “If you give up one dollar for the Lord, God will certainly give you one hundred dollars back in this life.”

Instead, this passage teaches that following Christ may cost us much, but it brings us into God’s greater spiritual family and grace; it also brings persecution; and finally, in the age to come, eternal life.

I. Where Does This Saying Appear?

The clearest passage is Mark 10:29–30.

Jesus said that anyone who leaves home, brothers, sisters, mother, father, children, or fields for Him and for the Good News,

will receive a hundred times more in this present age—homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and fields, with persecutions—and in the age to come, eternal life.

There are several key ideas here:

First, this present age.

Second, a hundredfold.

Third, with persecutions.

Fourth, eternal life in the age to come.

If we remove the third point, “with persecutions,” it becomes very easy to turn this passage into prosperity theology.

II. First Look at the Context: Why Did Peter Raise This Issue?

Just before this, we read the story of the rich young ruler.

This man had great wealth.

When Jesus challenged him to give up his wealth and follow Christ, he went away sorrowful.

Then Peter said to Jesus:

Peter said to Him, “Look, we have left everything and followed You.”

In other words, Peter’s question was essentially:

“Lord, we have given up so much to follow You. What, then, will we receive?”

Jesus did not simply rebuke them.

Jesus told them:

No one who truly gives up something for Christ will ultimately lose before God.

This is the first key to understanding “a hundredfold.”

III. Does “A Hundredfold in This Life” Mean 100 Times More Money?

不是。
No.

Reformed theology does not normally understand this as a mathematical rate of financial return.

Jesus is not giving us a spiritual investment formula:

Give $100 → God gives you $10,000.

If that were the meaning, the life of the Apostle Paul would be difficult to explain.

After Paul followed Christ, he did not become richer and richer.

Instead, he experienced hunger, danger, imprisonment, beatings, and persecution.

Philippians 4:12

Paul says that he knew how to live with little and how to live with plenty, whether well fed or hungry, whether having much or being in need.

Therefore, Scripture never promises that true Christians will necessarily become wealthy in this life.

IV. Then What Does “A Hundredfold” Mean?

This first points to a very important reality:

Christ brings us into a new covenant family—the church.

A person may lose family relationships because of faith in Christ.

But at the same time, he enters the body of Christ.

He may have had only one brother, but now he has many brothers in Christ.

He may have had only one sister, but now he has many sisters.

He once had only his natural family, but now he enters the household of God.

Therefore Paul calls the church:

“The household of God.”

V. This Is Not Merely a Metaphor, but a Real Spiritual Relationship

1 Timothy 5:1–2 tells us that relationships in the church should be like family relationships.

Older men are to be treated as fathers.

Younger men are to be treated as brothers.

Older women are to be treated as mothers.

Younger women are to be treated as sisters.

Therefore, “a hundredfold” includes at least this meaning:

You may lose one family because of Christ, yet receive a much larger family in Christ.

VI. The Early Church Really Lived This Way

Acts shows us that the promise of the “hundredfold” was not empty language.

The believers were together and shared what they had. They sold property and possessions and gave to anyone who had need.

This was not communism.

Scripture did not abolish private property.

Rather, the Holy Spirit moved Christians willingly to care for one another.

Therefore, someone who lost a home for Christ might discover that many Christians were willing to open their homes to him.

Someone who lost brothers and sisters would discover many brothers and sisters in the church.

This is one very concrete meaning of receiving “a hundredfold in this life.”

VII. But Jesus Deliberately Added: “With Persecutions”

This is one of the most easily ignored parts of the passage.

Jesus did not say:

After following Me, your life will become more and more comfortable.

Jesus said:

“With persecutions.”

Therefore, the Christian life in this age has a very special character:

Grace and suffering exist together.

Blessing and the cross exist together.

Spiritual abundance and worldly persecution exist together.

This fits the Reformed emphasis on the theology of the cross.

VIII. Therefore, the “Hundredfold” Cannot Become Prosperity Theology

Prosperity theology may explain it like this:

The more you give, the richer God will make you.

But Jesus Himself blocks this interpretation.

Because He says:

A hundredfold—with persecutions.

A true Christian may even lose a job because of faith.

He may lose property.

He may be rejected by family.

He may even lose his life.

Yet ultimately, he has not truly lost.

Why?

Because he has Christ.

IX. The Central Reformed Answer: The Greatest Gain Is Christ Himself

This agrees perfectly with Paul’s testimony.

Philippians 3:7–8

Paul says that whatever was once gain to him, he now counts as loss because of Christ.

More than that, he considers everything loss compared with the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus his Lord.

This is very important to the Reformed understanding of this passage.

The Christian’s greatest reward is not a house.

It is not land.

It is not wealth.

It is not even heaven first of all.

The greatest reward is Christ Himself.

X. What Does “Eternal Life in the Age to Come” Mean?

Here we must avoid another misunderstanding.

Jesus is not saying:

We earn eternal life because we sacrificed many things.

Reformed theology is very clear on this point:

Justification is by grace alone, through faith alone, because of Christ alone.

Ephesians 2:8–9

“你们得救是本乎恩,也因着信;这并不是出于自己,乃是神所赐的;
You are saved by grace through faith. This does not come from yourselves; it is God’s gift.

It is not the result of works, so that no one can boast.

因此:
Therefore:

Sacrifice is not the price of eternal life.

Sacrifice is the fruit of faith.

XI. Why Is a True Believer Willing to Give Things Up?

Because he has discovered a greater treasure.

Jesus gave a beautiful parable.

The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man finds it, he joyfully sells all he has and buys that field.

注意:
Notice:

The man does not sell everything merely in misery.

而是:
Rather:

“With joy.”

Why?

Because he discovers:

What he gains is far greater than what he gives up.

XII. Moses Is a Good Example

Hebrews 11:24–26 tells us that Moses chose to suffer with the people of God rather than enjoy the temporary pleasures of sin.

He gave up the status of Egypt’s royal court.

From the world’s perspective, he suffered a huge loss.

But Scripture says:

“Because he was looking ahead to his reward.”

This is the perspective of faith.

The world calculates only this life.

The Christian calculates eternity.

XIII. Reformed Theology Also Emphasizes the “Already and Not Yet”

The kingdom of God has already come through Christ.

But the final fullness of the kingdom has not yet come.

Therefore, Christians already possess eternal life now.

But we have not yet experienced the final glory of eternal life.

This is:

Already — 已然。
Already.

Not Yet — 未然。
Not yet.

We are already justified.

We have already been adopted as God’s children.

We already have the Holy Spirit.

We already belong to God’s kingdom.

But we still become sick.

We still suffer.

We still die.

We may still be persecuted.

Everything will be fully completed when Christ returns.

XIV. Therefore, Do Not Understand “A Hundredfold” as an Exact Mathematical Number

“A hundredfold” expresses an exceedingly abundant reward, far greater than what we have given up.

It is not a bank ledger.

例如:
For example:

If a missionary leaves one house for the gospel, it does not mean God must give him 100 houses.

If someone is rejected by family because of faith in Christ, it does not mean God must give him 100 biological mothers.

The point is:

In Christ and in His body, what we receive far exceeds what we lose for Him.

XV. Another Important Balance: Material Blessings in This Life Should Not Be Completely Excluded

Reformed theology does not say that God never blesses Christians materially.

God may certainly give us work.

God may provide a home.

God may provide food.

God may meet our financial needs through brothers and sisters.

These are all gifts of God’s providence.

Jesus teaches us not to worry about what we will eat, drink, or wear.

He tells us to seek first God’s kingdom and His righteousness.

Our heavenly Father knows that we need these things.

The error is not believing that God will provide for us.

The error is turning God into a tool for becoming rich.

XVI. A Simple Reformed Summary

We can summarize the passage in four statements:

First, salvation is a free gift of grace; it is not purchased by our sacrifices.

Second, true faith makes a person willing to give up earthly things for Christ.

Third, the Christian’s “hundredfold” in this life is chiefly the far greater riches found in Christ, the church, God’s providence, and spiritual blessings; yet these blessings exist together with persecution.

Fourth, our final and complete inheritance is not earthly wealth, but eternal life and the full glory of God’s kingdom in the age to come.

XVII. Remember This Passage in One Sentence

Christ does not promise, “Follow Me, and you will become rich.”

Christ promises, “Nothing truly lost for My sake will ultimately be a real loss.”

In this life, we receive far more in Christ and His body than what we give up, while also carrying the cross and experiencing persecution.

In the age to come, we will receive eternal life.

Therefore, Christians do not exchange temporary things for more temporary things; because we have received Christ, we can let go of temporary things and look forward to an eternal inheritance.

This is also what Paul means when he says that knowing Christ Jesus his Lord is of surpassing worth.
