Exodus 2 Analysis

Exodus 2 is very important because the focus moves from the suffering of Israel to God preparing a deliverer—Moses.

But the true main character is not Moses, but God, who rules everything behind history.

I. Structure of the Chapter

Exodus 2 can be divided into five main parts.

Verses 1–10: Moses is born and adopted by Pharaoh’s daughter.
Verses 11–15: Moses kills an Egyptian and runs away from Egypt.
Verses 16–22: Moses comes to Midian, marries, and lives there.
Verses 23–25: The Israelites cry out to God.
The final focus: God hears, remembers, sees, and knows.

II. Verses 1–4: A Child Born Under a Death Sentence

Moses was born when Pharaoh had ordered Hebrew baby boys to be thrown into the Nile.

From a human point of view, this was a very dark time.

But from God’s point of view, God was preparing salvation in the darkness.

This is a pattern we often see in the Bible.

Man sees a crisis, but God is preparing salvation.

Moses’ parents hid him for three months.

Hebrews 11:23 especially explains this event.

They did this by faith and were not afraid of the king’s command.

We can see an important principle here.

Christians should normally obey the government, but government authority is not absolute.

If the government commands people to directly disobey God, obedience to God comes before obedience to man.

This agrees with Acts 5:29: “We must obey God rather than men.”

III. Verses 3–6: The Nile Was a River of Death, but It Became a Way of Rescue

When Moses’ mother could no longer hide him, she made a basket for him.

There is an interesting Hebrew detail here.

The Hebrew word translated as “basket” is the same word used for Noah’s ark in Genesis: tevah.

This word is very rare in the Bible.

Noah was saved through the flood in an “ark.”

Moses was also saved through water in a small “ark.”

This does not mean the two events are exactly the same, but there is a clear theological connection.

Water represents the threat of death, but God can make the waters of death become a way of salvation.

Later, the whole nation of Israel will experience something similar.

They will pass through the Red Sea and be saved from Pharaoh.

IV. Verses 5–10: The Great Irony—Pharaoh’s Own House Raises Moses

This is one of the most remarkable parts of the chapter.

Pharaoh wanted to kill all the Hebrew baby boys.

But Pharaoh’s daughter saved a Hebrew baby boy.

And this child later became the man God used against Pharaoh.

Even more amazingly, Moses’ own mother was asked to nurse her own son.

And she was even paid for doing it.

This is a powerful example of biblical irony.

Pharaoh wanted to destroy God’s people, but in his own palace he helped raise the deliverer God had prepared.

This fits very well with the Reformed understanding of God’s providence.

The Westminster Confession teaches that God providentially rules all things, including human actions and history.

This does not mean Pharaoh had no responsibility.

Pharaoh was still responsible for his evil.

But human sin cannot destroy God’s plan.

People may even be fighting against God while unknowingly becoming instruments in God’s plan.

This is very similar to the story of Joseph.

Joseph’s brothers wanted to harm him.

But God used their evil intentions to accomplish His good purpose.

V. Verses 11–15: Moses Tries to “Deliver” and Fails

When Moses grew up, he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew man.

Moses killed the Egyptian and hid his body in the sand.

We need to notice an important point here.

Moses’ concern for his oppressed people was not wrong in itself.

Acts 7 also shows that Moses understood that God would use him to deliver Israel.

But the problem was this: Moses tried to do God’s work in his own way, by his own strength, and in his own timing.

What was the result?

失败。
Failure.

Yesterday he was a prince in Egypt’s royal house.

Today he became a fugitive.

This was a very important breaking point in Moses’ life.

VI. Why Did God Leave Moses in the Wilderness for Forty Years?

Acts 7 tells us that Moses was about forty years old when he fled to Midian.

Later, when God called him from the burning bush, he was about eighty years old.

This means Moses lived in Midian for about forty years.

Why so long?

The Bible does not directly say, “God trained Moses for forty years.”

So we should not say more than Scripture says.

But from the whole story, we can clearly see a change.

Young Moses had ability, status, education, and passion.

But he was also ready to depend on himself.

Forty years later, when God called him, he kept asking, “Who am I?”

This is worth thinking about.

God often does not first use a man who thinks he is strong; He first teaches him that he is weak.

This is similar to the principle Paul later teaches.

“My power is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9)

VII. Verses 16–22: From Prince to Shepherd

After Moses fled to Midian, he helped some women who were being mistreated by shepherds.

This shows that Moses still had a strong sense of justice.

In Egypt, he saw a Hebrew man being mistreated, and he acted.

In Midian, he saw women being mistreated, and he acted again.

So Moses consistently had a tendency to help the oppressed.

But God needed to change the way he acted.

Moses later married Zipporah.

They had a son named Gershom.

Moses said, “I have become a foreigner in a foreign land.”

Moses had now lost his former identity.

He was not truly an Egyptian.

He was not living with his Hebrew people either.

He became a sojourner.

This was also part of God’s shaping of him.

VIII. Verses 23–25: The True Climax of the Chapter

This section is extremely important.

Four actions appear here.

God heard.

God remembered.

God saw.

God knew.

These four words can almost serve as a key to the whole book of Exodus.

1. 神听见

1. God Heard

Israel had suffered in Egypt for a long time.

It was not because God could not hear them.

God had His own timing.

God’s silence does not mean God’s absence.

2. 神记念

2. God Remembered

“Remembered” does not mean that God had forgotten and suddenly remembered.

When the Bible says God “remembers,” it often means that God acts according to His covenant.

What did God remember?

Not how good the Israelites were.

Not that they deserved salvation more than the Egyptians.

而是:
Rather:

God remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

This is the covenant, which is especially important in Reformed theology.

The foundation of salvation is not human merit.

The foundation of salvation is God’s own faithfulness and grace.

IX. An Important Question: Did Israel Deserve to Be Saved?

The answer is: No.

Exodus is not simply a story of “good people being hurt by bad people, so God helps the good people.”

The Bible later shows us that the Israelites themselves were sinners.

They will complain.

They will refuse to believe.

They will even make a golden calf.

So the question is not:

“The Israelites are so good, so why does God not save them?”

The real question should be:

“These sinners do not deserve salvation. Why does God still save them?”

The answer is: grace and covenant.

X. Moses and Christ: A Greater Deliverer

From a Reformed redemptive-historical perspective, Moses is also a type of Christ.

Of course, Moses is not Christ.

Moses himself was a sinner and needed salvation.

But some events in Moses’ life point forward to the greater Savior.

When Moses was born, a king wanted to kill baby boys.

When Jesus was born, Herod also wanted to kill baby boys.

Moses miraculously escaped death.

Jesus also escaped Herod’s attempt to kill Him.

Moses left the royal house and identified with suffering people.

Christ humbled Himself far more fully and identified with His people.

Moses later led Israel out of slavery in Egypt.

But Christ saves His people from a deeper slavery—sin and death.

So Moses was a deliverer, but he was not the final Deliverer.

Moses points to Christ.

XI. Five Main Lessons from a Reformed Perspective

1. God’s sovereignty is above human plans.

Pharaoh wanted Moses dead, but God brought Moses into Pharaoh’s own house.

Human evil cannot overthrow God’s purpose.

2. God’s providence is sometimes hidden.

Interestingly, much of Exodus 2 does not directly describe God performing miracles.

But God is working all the time.

The basket, Moses’ sister, Pharaoh’s daughter, the nurse, and Midian all look like ordinary events.

But all these ordinary events are under God’s providence.

3. God’s work cannot be accomplished by human strength.

Moses had zeal, but he killed the Egyptian.

Zeal itself does not equal righteousness.

A right goal does not make a wrong method right.

4. God often shapes His servants through waiting.

At forty, Moses may have thought he was ready.

But God made him wait another forty years.

God’s “waiting” is not wasted time.

5. Salvation rests on God’s covenant and grace.

The chapter does not end by saying, “God saw that Israel behaved well.”

Instead, it says:

“God remembered His covenant.”

This is one of the true theological centers of Exodus.

XII. One-Sentence Summary

Exodus 2 teaches us that while God’s people are still suffering, Moses is still in the wilderness, and Pharaoh seems to be in control, God is already quietly and perfectly preparing deliverance according to His covenant and sovereign plan.

And this story does not finally leave us with Moses.

Moses is only a type; Christ is the greater, perfect, and final Deliverer.
