Genesis 50 Analysis
ESL English
Genesis 50 is the final chapter of Genesis.
On the surface, this chapter is about death: Jacob dies, and later Joseph also dies.
But from the perspective of redemptive history, the main message is not death, but that God’s faithfulness, providence, and promises continue.
One of the most important verses in this chapter is Genesis 50:20.
> “You meant to hurt me, but God turned your evil into good.”
Genesis 50:20
This sentence is a theological summary of Joseph’s life, and it is also an important key to understanding the Reformed doctrine of God’s providence.
I. Structure of the Chapter
Genesis 50 can be divided into four parts.
Part 1: Verses 1–6 — Joseph mourns for Jacob and prepares to bury his father.
Part 2: Verses 7–14 — Jacob is buried in the cave of Machpelah in Canaan.
Part 3: Verses 15–21 — Joseph’s brothers fear revenge, but Joseph forgives and comforts them.
Part 4: Verses 22–26 — Before his death, Joseph still believes that God will bring Israel back to the Promised Land.
The chapter begins with Jacob’s death and ends with Joseph’s death.
But between these two deaths, we see a more important truth: people die, but God’s covenant does not die.
II. Genesis 50:1–3 — Joseph Mourns for His Father
Although Joseph knew that his father died in faith, he still wept deeply.
This reminds us that Christian faith does not mean that we cannot grieve when someone we love dies.
The Bible never teaches, “A person with true faith will never cry.”
Jesus Himself also wept at the tomb of Lazarus.
> “Jesus cried.”
But Christian grief is different from the grief of people who have no hope.
We may cry.
We may miss those who have died.
But we do not grieve without hope.
Because death is not the end of God’s plan of redemption.
III. Genesis 50:4–14 — Why Must Jacob Be Buried in Canaan?
Before his death, Jacob specifically told Joseph not to leave his body permanently in Egypt.
He asked to be buried in the cave of Machpelah in Canaan.
Why was this so important?
Because this was not only a decision about a burial place.
It was a declaration of faith.
God had promised Abraham that He would give the land of Canaan to his descendants.
Although Jacob died in Egypt, he still believed God’s promise concerning Canaan.
In other words, Jacob’s tomb itself was “preaching.”
It was like a message to later generations:
“Egypt is not your final home.”
“You must wait for the place God has promised.”
IV. Reformed Perspective: Faith Holds On to God’s Promise
Hebrews especially explains this kind of faith.
They did not see the complete fulfillment of the promise during their lifetime.
But they still believed.
This is an important feature of covenant faith.
Faith does not believe only because it has already seen.
Faith believes because God has spoken.
This also reminds Christians today that our true eternal home is not in this world.
V. Genesis 50:15 — Why Were Joseph’s Brothers Afraid Again?
After Jacob died, Joseph’s brothers immediately became afraid.
They worried that Joseph had not taken revenge only because their father was still alive.
Now that their father was dead, they feared Joseph would punish them for the past.
Here we see one long-term result of sin: fear.
Their sin of selling Joseph many years earlier still affected their consciences.
Sin not only hurts others; it also enslaves the sinner.
VI. Genesis 50:17 — “Joseph Cried”
When the brothers again asked for forgiveness, the Bible says:
Why did Joseph cry?
The Bible does not explicitly tell us.
But from the context, one likely reason is that his brothers still did not fully trust his kindness.
Joseph had already accepted them.
Joseph had already provided for them.
Joseph had already been reconciled to them.
But they were still living in fear.
This gives us a helpful picture of the Christian life.
Sometimes God has already forgiven us, but we still live as if God is waiting to punish us.
But those who are truly justified in Christ are no longer under God’s condemnation.
VII. Genesis 50:19 — “Can I Take God’s Place?”
Joseph answered his brothers:
This is a very important statement.
Joseph had great political power.
From a human point of view, he had enough power to take revenge on his brothers.
But Joseph knew that he was not God.
Final judgment belongs to God.
This agrees with the principle in Romans 12.
Christian forgiveness does not mean that sin does not exist.
It does not mean that evil has no consequences.
Rather, it means: Final judgment belongs to God, not to me.
VIII. Genesis 50:20 — The Theological Center of the Chapter
Now we come to one of the most important statements in this chapter and in the whole story of Joseph.
This verse is especially important because it explains how human responsibility and God’s sovereignty exist at the same time.
Was what Joseph’s brothers did evil?
是。
Yes.
Were they responsible?
有。
Yes.
But did God lose control?
没有。
No.
Did God discover the problem later and then try to fix it?
不是。
No.
Joseph did not say:
“You wanted to hurt me, but fortunately God later repaired the situation.”
He said:
“You meant it for evil, but God meant it for good.”
There are two intentions here.
Man’s intention — evil.
God’s intention — good.
And they were present in the same event.
IX. The Reformed Doctrine of Providence
This is exactly what Reformed theology strongly emphasizes in the doctrine of providence.
God did not simply create the world and then leave it to run by itself.
God continually sustains, governs, and rules over all things.
Nothing can escape God’s ultimate sovereignty.
Even sinful human actions cannot destroy God’s ultimate plan.
But we must be very careful here.
God’s sovereignty over sin does not mean that God commits sin.
God’s use of evil does not mean that God is the author of evil.
James says:
Therefore, Reformed theology holds two truths together:
First, God is absolutely sovereign.
Second, human beings are truly responsible for their sins.
We must not weaken God’s sovereignty in order to protect human responsibility.
And we must not remove human responsibility in order to emphasize God’s sovereignty.
The Bible teaches both.
X. Joseph and Christ
From the perspective of redemptive history, Joseph’s life also points us toward Christ.
Joseph was rejected by his own brothers.
Jesus was also rejected by His own people.
Joseph was sold.
Jesus was also betrayed.
Joseph suffered though he was innocent.
Christ was completely sinless, yet He suffered for sinners.
People wanted to harm Joseph, but God used it to save many lives.
People crucified Christ, but God accomplished redemption through the cross.
Acts says concerning the cross of Christ:
This has a deep connection with Genesis 50:20.
Human beings did something truly evil.
But God’s plan of redemption did not fail.
In fact, God accomplished His eternal plan of redemption through the cross.
Therefore, Genesis 50:20 finds its greatest expression at the cross.
XI. Genesis 50:21 — True Forgiveness Produces Action
Joseph continued:
Joseph did not only say, “I forgive you.”
He actually provided for them.
Then the Bible says:
This is a beautiful picture of grace.
Those who once hurt Joseph now receive food, protection, and comfort from him.
This also reminds us of the gospel.
We were people who sinned against God.
But in Christ, God not only forgives His people; He also receives them as His children.
XII. Genesis 50:22–26 — Joseph’s Faith at Death
Joseph lived to be 110 years old.
Before he died, he said something very important:
Notice Joseph said:
“I am going to die.”
“But God…”
This is a very important contrast in the chapter.
People die.
Great leaders die.
Patriarchs die.
Joseph will also die.
But God still lives.
God’s covenant is still in effect.
God’s promises still continue.
XIII. “God Will Surely Come to Help You” — The Bridge to Exodus
Joseph knew that although Israel was now living in Egypt, Egypt was not the final destination.
他说:
He said:
Later in Exodus, God truly came to help His people.
So the ending of Genesis prepares us for Exodus.
At the end of Genesis, the Israelites are still in Egypt.
The Promised Land has not yet been received.
The Exodus has not yet happened.
Moses has not even been born.
But Joseph believes:
God will surely do what He has promised.
XIV. Why Did Joseph Ask Them to Carry His Bones Away?
Joseph finally made the Israelites swear:
Joseph did not ask to be buried in Canaan immediately.
His body was embalmed and placed in a coffin in Egypt.
But his coffin became a sign of faith.
Every generation of Israelites who saw Joseph’s coffin should remember:
“We will not stay here forever.”
“God will surely bring us out.”
Hundreds of years later, Moses truly carried Joseph’s bones out of Egypt.
XV. How Does Hebrews Describe Joseph?
Interestingly, when Hebrews 11 lists heroes of faith, it does not focus on Joseph’s great achievements in governing Egypt.
It does not especially mention his interpretation of Pharaoh’s dreams.
It does not focus on how he managed the food supply.
Instead, Hebrews says:
Why?
Because the greatest thing at the end of Joseph’s life was not his position, but his faith.
Although he lived in one of the greatest empires of the world, he knew that Egypt was not his final home.
XVI. A Great Contrast Between the Beginning and End of Genesis
How does Genesis begin?
> “In the beginning God created the sky and the earth.”
Genesis 1:1
生命。
Life.
创造。
Creation.
Blessing.
But what is the final sentence of Genesis?
At the end we see:
Death.
A coffin.
Egypt.
Why?
Because sin entered the world in Genesis 3.
God had warned Adam:
So from creation in Genesis 1 to the coffin in Genesis 50, we see that the wages of sin is death.
But the story is not finished.
XVII. From the “Coffin” to Christ’s “Empty Tomb”
Genesis ends beside a coffin.
But the whole Bible does not end beside a coffin.
The Old Testament continues to wait.
The descendants of Abraham continue to wait.
Israel continues to wait.
They wait until the true “offspring of the woman” comes.
He is Jesus Christ.
Christ entered death.
But death could not hold Him.
He rose from the dead.
Therefore, we can see a great line of redemptive history:
Eden → Fall → Abraham → Isaac → Jacob → Joseph → Egypt → Exodus → Promised Land → David → Christ → Cross → Resurrection → New Heaven and New Earth.
XVIII. Five Important Applications from Genesis 50
First, when we cannot understand our circumstances, we can still trust God’s providence.
Joseph did not know what would happen when he was in the pit.
He did not know while he was in prison either.
But God was always working.
Second, the evil that others do to us cannot defeat God’s plan.
This does not mean that evil becomes good.
It means that God is so powerful that He can even use human evil to accomplish His holy purpose.
Third, forgiveness does not deny sin; it leaves final judgment to God.
Joseph did not say that his brothers had not sinned.
He clearly called their actions evil.
But he refused to put himself in God’s place.
Fourth, we must not treat this present life as our final home.
Joseph had wealth, position, and honor in Egypt.
But at death, he was still thinking about God’s promise.
Christians should do the same.
We may work.
We may care for our families.
We may participate in society.
But our final hope must not be built on this world.
Fifth, a human life ends, but God’s plan of redemption does not end.
Abraham died.
Isaac died.
Jacob died.
Joseph also died.
但是:
But:
God is still God.
The covenant still stands.
The promise still stands.
Redemptive history still moves forward toward Christ.
XIX. The Most Important Spiritual Principle
If we summarize Genesis 50 in one sentence, we can say:
Human sin cannot destroy God’s plan, and human death cannot end God’s promise; in His providence, God directs all things toward His redemptive purpose.
Especially remember:
> “You meant to hurt me, but God turned your evil into good.”
Genesis 50:20
This does not cheaply mean that “all bad things are actually good things.”
不是。
No.
Evil is still evil.
But the Reformed faith gives us a greater comfort:
Evil is real, but evil does not have final control.
Satan is real, but Satan is not sovereign.
Human sin is real, but human sin cannot make God’s plan fail.
God is ultimately sovereign.
And the cross is the greatest proof of this truth.
The greatest human evil—the killing of the innocent Christ—became, in God’s eternal plan, the way by which He saves sinners.
Therefore, when we experience things that we cannot understand, we may not immediately know “why.”
But we can know “Who” is still in control.
It is our God.
This is the message Genesis reveals from chapter 1 all the way to chapter 50:
God creates. God promises. God chooses. God provides. God preserves. God fulfills.
