My Question
English (ESL):
Should Christians care about politics?
Should Christians vote?
Should Christians take part in elections?
Should Christians try to improve their community and society?
Reformed Answer
English (ESL):
Yes.
But Christians
must follow
the Bible.
Christians should not
turn politics
into the gospel.
They should not
turn the gospel
into politics.
But
Christians should not
run away
from their responsibility
in society.
First Principle
God Is Also Lord Over Government
Many people think,
God only rules
the church.
The Bible
does not teach that.
God rules
the whole world.
包括:
Including
政府、
government,
国家、
nations,
法律、
laws,
君王。
and kings.
First Scripture
Psalm 24:1
English (NCV)
The earth
and everything on it
belong to the Lord.
The world
and all its people
belong to Him.
Explanation
English (ESL):
The whole world
belongs to God.
Not only
the church.
Governments,
courts,
schools,
and nations
also belong to God.
Second Scripture
Romans 13:1–2
English (NCV)
All of you
must obey
the government rulers.
There is no authority
unless God
has given it.
The authorities
that exist
have been placed there
by God.
So anyone
who is against
the government
is really against
what God has commanded.
Explanation
English (ESL):
Paul did not say
that government
comes from Satan.
He said
government
is established
by God.
Governments
may become sinful.
Leaders
may become evil.
But
government itself
is God's institution.
(Important Note):
>
>
> Romans 13 teaches respect for lawful authority, but it does not require unconditional obedience to every command. When the government commands what God forbids or forbids what God commands, Christians must obey God first (Acts 5:29). Reformed theology has consistently held both principles together.
Third Scripture
Jeremiah 29:7
为那城祷告耶和华;
English (NCV)
Work for the good
of the city
where I have sent you.
Pray to the Lord
for that city.
If that city
has peace,
you also
will have peace.
Explanation
English (ESL):
Notice this.
This was Babylon,
not Israel.
Babylon
did not worship
the true God.
Yet
God told His people
to pray
for the city
and work
for its good.
This verse is very important
for Christians today.
Wherever Christians live,
they should care
for their community,
城市、
their city,
and their neighbors,
because this is part
of loving our neighbors.
Fourth Scripture
English (NCV)
You are the salt of the earth... You are the light of the world... Let people see your good works and praise your Father in heaven.
Explanation
English (ESL):
Salt slows decay.
Light pushes back darkness.
If there is poverty,
violence,
or injustice,
Christians should not say,
"It has nothing to do with me."
We should do good,
help people,
and show Christ
in biblical
and lawful ways.
May Christians Vote?
English (ESL)
If a country
allows citizens
to vote,
Reformed Christians
generally believe
that voting
can be a responsibility
and a way
to love your neighbor.
Your choice
may affect
laws,
education,
families,
religious freedom,
the weak,
and justice.
So Christians
should make decisions
according to
biblical principles.
但是……
But...
Here we must add
one very important point.
Reformed theology
has never taught:
>
> One political party is the Kingdom of God.
Nor has it taught:
>
> Supporting one candidate automatically makes someone more spiritual.
The Bible
does not teach this.
Our true hope
is not
in any government,
but in Christ.
Fifth Scripture
Philippians 3:20
English (NCV)
Our homeland is in heaven, and we are waiting for our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, to come from heaven.
Explanation
English (ESL):
Christians
may care
about their country,
but it must not
be their final hope.
We may work
to improve society,
but no government
can establish
God's Kingdom.
Perfect justice,
peace,
and holiness
will only come
when Christ returns.
Summary
English (ESL)
Reformed theology teaches that Christians should not withdraw from public life. Government is ordained by God, and the Bible tells us to seek the peace of the city, be salt and light, and love our neighbors. Therefore, voting lawfully, caring for the community, and promoting justice can all be faithful Christian responsibilities.
At the same time, Reformed theology strongly teaches that the gospel is not politics. No political party, nation, or leader can take the place of Christ. Our highest loyalty belongs to God, and our final hope is in the return of Jesus Christ, not in any earthly government.
