Question Four (Part 2)
My Question
English (ESL):
If neither candidate is a Christian,
and both have many weaknesses,
should Christians still vote?
Should Christians refuse to vote?
Reformed Answer
English (ESL):
The Bible does not tell Christians
which candidate they must support.
The Bible also does not command
that Christians must never vote.
Instead,
the Bible tells us
to use biblical wisdom
and a well-informed conscience
to make faithful decisions.
First Principle
The Bible Calls Us to Choose Wisely
James 1:5
English (NCV)
Do any of you need wisdom?
Ask God for it.
He is generous
and enjoys giving
to everyone.
So He will give you wisdom.
Explanation
English (ESL):
The Bible does not give
a detailed answer
for every decision.
But God promises
to give wisdom.
When Christians face
difficult choices,
they should first pray
and ask God for wisdom.
Second Principle
Not Every Choice Is Equally Good
Everyone is a sinner.
English (NCV)
Everyone has sinned
and fallen short
of God's glorious standard.
Explanation
English (ESL):
There is
no perfect person,
no perfect president,
and no perfect political party.
Christians are not looking
for perfection.
Instead,
they seek
the choice
that is more consistent
with justice
and biblical principles.
Third Principle
God Cares About Justice
Micah 6:8
English (NCV)
The Lord has told you
what is good.
He has told you
what He wants from you:
Do what is right,
love mercy,
and walk humbly
with your God.
Explanation
English (ESL):
God cares about
justice,
mercy,
honesty,
and humility.
Christians should not ask only,
"Do I like this person?"
They should also ask,
"Does this policy
better reflect
biblical justice?"
Fourth Principle
Love Your Neighbor
English (NCV)
Love your neighbor
as you love yourself.
Explanation
English (ESL):
Voting
should not be only
about personal benefit.
Christians should ask,
"Will this help
my neighbors,
my community,
and the common good?"
But the Most Important Point
Reformed theology always teaches:
Politics matters.
But politics
is not
the most important thing.
Why?
因为:
Because
No president
can forgive sin.
No government
can give
a new heart.
No law
can save people.
Only Christ
can save sinners.
Fifth Scripture
不属这世界;
English (NCV)
Jesus answered,
"My kingdom
does not belong
to this world.
If My kingdom
belonged to this world,
My servants
would fight."
Explanation
English (ESL):
Jesus was not saying
that His kingdom
has nothing to do
with the world.
He was saying
that God's kingdom
is not established
by political power
or military force.
God's kingdom grows
through the gospel,
the Holy Spirit,
and the truth.
Therefore,
no matter
what happens in politics,
the church's greatest mission
is still
to proclaim Christ.
English (Summary):
The Westminster Confession, Chapter 23, teaches that God appoints civil magistrates for His own glory and for the public good. Christians may lawfully hold public office, should pray for rulers, honor lawful authority, and obey them insofar as such obedience does not require disobedience to God.
Reformed Summary (3)
English (ESL)
Reformed theology teaches that Christians may vote and take part in public life, but the Bible—not political parties, ideologies, or personal interests—must be the highest authority. When no candidate is perfect, Christians are not looking for a savior, because only Christ is the Savior. Instead, they prayerfully use wisdom and conscience to choose what is more consistent with biblical justice, truth, and love for neighbor.
At the same time, Christians must never make politics an idol or reduce the gospel to a political movement. The church's central mission is always to worship God, preach the gospel, and make disciples, while individual believers faithfully serve as salt and light in every area of life.
> God's sovereignty never removes human responsibility. God ordains not only the end, but also the faithful means by which He accomplishes His purposes.
