22) / Reformed Theology Studies (Archive 22)
2026-02-23Continue to work out your salvation
with fear and respect.
Because God
is working in you
to help you want to do
and be able to do
what pleases Him.
Explanation
English (ESL):
These two verses
must be read together.
Verse 12 says,
"Work."
Verse 13 says,
"God is working in you."
So,
it is not
"God works,
so people do nothing."
It is
"Because God works,
people can work."
Fourth Scripture
English (NCV)
I planted the seed.
Apollos watered it.
But God made it grow.
The one who plants
is not important.
The one who waters
is not important.
Only God,
who makes things grow,
is important.
Explanation
English (ESL):
Paul planted.
Apollos watered.
God gave the growth.
All three actions
were real.
God did not say,
"I will make people grow,
so Paul does not need
to preach."
Fifth Scripture
Romans 1:16
我不以福音为耻;
English (NCV)
I am proud of the Good News,
because it is the power God uses
to save everyone who believes—
first the Jews
and also those who are not Jews.
Explanation
English (ESL):
God saves people
through the gospel.
So,
Paul knew
he must preach it.
The Westminster Confession
却借着基督得救;
English (Summary, ESL):
The Westminster Confession teaches that God not only ordains the salvation of His people, but also ordains every step by which He brings them to salvation: calling, faith, justification, adoption, sanctification, perseverance, and finally glory.
Reformed Summary (2)
English (ESL):
Reformed theology has never taught, "Since God has ordained everything, our work is useless."
Instead, because God is sovereign, our work is not in vain. God uses our prayers, preaching, teaching, encouragement, and service to accomplish His will.
