03) / A Reformed Perspective (Archive 03)

2026-05-19

The believers were together and shared what they had. They sold property and possessions and gave to anyone who had need.

This was not communism.

Scripture did not abolish private property.

Rather, the Holy Spirit moved Christians willingly to care for one another.

Therefore, someone who lost a home for Christ might discover that many Christians were willing to open their homes to him.

Someone who lost brothers and sisters would discover many brothers and sisters in the church.

This is one very concrete meaning of receiving “a hundredfold in this life.”

VII. But Jesus Deliberately Added: “With Persecutions”

This is one of the most easily ignored parts of the passage.

Jesus did not say:

After following Me, your life will become more and more comfortable.

Jesus said:

“With persecutions.”

Therefore, the Christian life in this age has a very special character:

Grace and suffering exist together.

Blessing and the cross exist together.

Spiritual abundance and worldly persecution exist together.

This fits the Reformed emphasis on the theology of the cross.

VIII. Therefore, the “Hundredfold” Cannot Become Prosperity Theology

Prosperity theology may explain it like this:

The more you give, the richer God will make you.

But Jesus Himself blocks this interpretation.

Because He says:

A hundredfold—with persecutions.

A true Christian may even lose a job because of faith.

He may lose property.

He may be rejected by family.

He may even lose his life.

Yet ultimately, he has not truly lost.

Why?

Because he has Christ.

IX. The Central Reformed Answer: The Greatest Gain Is Christ Himself

This agrees perfectly with Paul’s testimony.

Philippians 3:7–8

Paul says that whatever was once gain to him, he now counts as loss because of Christ.

More than that, he considers everything loss compared with the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus his Lord.
