06) / A Reformed Perspective (Archive 06)
Second, true faith makes a person willing to give up earthly things for Christ.
Third, the Christian’s “hundredfold” in this life is chiefly the far greater riches found in Christ, the church, God’s providence, and spiritual blessings; yet these blessings exist together with persecution.
Fourth, our final and complete inheritance is not earthly wealth, but eternal life and the full glory of God’s kingdom in the age to come.
XVII. Remember This Passage in One Sentence
Christ does not promise, “Follow Me, and you will become rich.”
Christ promises, “Nothing truly lost for My sake will ultimately be a real loss.”
In this life, we receive far more in Christ and His body than what we give up, while also carrying the cross and experiencing persecution.
In the age to come, we will receive eternal life.
Therefore, Christians do not exchange temporary things for more temporary things; because we have received Christ, we can let go of temporary things and look forward to an eternal inheritance.
This is also what Paul means when he says that knowing Christ Jesus his Lord is of surpassing worth.
