Luke 17 Analysis (Reformed Perspective, Bilingual, ESL Level)

I. Overview

Luke 17 teaches several important aspects of a disciple's life: causing others to stumble, forgiveness, faith, the duty of servants, the healing of ten lepers, and the coming of the Kingdom of God.

Although these subjects seem different, they all center on one theme: how those who belong to God's Kingdom should live.

The Reformed view teaches that this chapter emphasizes not human ability, but God's grace transforming people's lives.

II. Do Not Cause Others to Stumble (17:1–2)

>
> Jesus said to His disciples, "Things that cause people to stumble are bound to come, but woe to anyone through whom they come."

The world is full of sin, so temptations will certainly exist.

However, God will still judge those who lead others into sin.

This reminds church leaders, parents, and teachers to be careful with their words and actions.

III. Forgive Your Brother Repeatedly (17:3–4)

If your brother sins, rebuke him; if he repents, forgive him.

Reformed Analysis

The Bible does not tell us to tolerate sin.

First confront the sin, then forgive the one who repents.

As God forgives us, we should also forgive others.

IV. Faith Like a Mustard Seed (17:5–6)

The apostles said,

Increase our faith.

Jesus answered,

If you have faith as small as a mustard seed...

Reformed Analysis

The emphasis is not on the size of faith, but on the object of true faith.

True faith depends on the Almighty God.

Even a small faith is powerful if it is genuine, because its power comes from God.

V. Unworthy Servants (17:7–10)

This is an important passage in Reformed theology.

Jesus said,

We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.

Reformed Analysis

None of our obedience can earn God's grace.

God never owes us anything.

Even if we serve faithfully all our lives, we have only fulfilled our duty.
