Statement 5: Salvation Is by the Spirit, and Good Works Are the Fruit of Salvation

Statement of Faith

English:
We believe that a person’s salvation depends entirely on the power and work of the Holy Spirit, not on human godliness, moral character, or good works (Romans 7:18).

English:
But we also believe that true believers will pursue growth in godliness (1 Timothy 4:8), moral excellence (Philippians 4:8), and good works (Ephesians 2:10) as they continue to walk with the Lord.

The Central Doctrine

We are not saved because we are godly; after we are saved, however, we will begin to pursue godliness.

We are not justified by God because of good character; but those whom God justifies will gradually produce godly character.

We are not saved by good works; but true salvation will never remain permanently without the fruit of good works.

We are justified by faith alone, but the faith that justifies is never alone.

Romans 7:18 — Salvation Cannot Depend on the Flesh

Romans 7:18

Paul recognizes that nothing good dwells in his sinful flesh. He may desire what is right, yet in himself he lacks the power to carry it out.

Explanation

This does not mean that human beings can never do anything outwardly good.

An unbeliever may love his children, help the poor, work honestly, and care for his parents.

The problem is this: fallen people cannot produce, from their own flesh, a righteousness that justifies them before a holy God.

Christianity does not teach:

“First become a good person, and then God will save you.”

The gospel declares:

“You cannot save yourself, so Christ came to save sinners.”

The Holy Spirit Gives Life

John 3:5–6

Jesus taught that no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Human flesh gives birth to human life, but the Spirit gives spiritual life.

Regeneration is not first of all human self-improvement; it is the Holy Spirit giving new life.

This is why Christianity is different from mere moral education.

Moral education can tell a person, “This is what you should do.”

But the Holy Spirit makes a spiritually dead person alive.

1 Timothy 4:7–8 — After Salvation, Train Yourself for Godliness

Paul does not say:

“Since salvation is entirely by grace, Christians do not need discipline.”

It is exactly the opposite.

Because we have received grace, we should train ourselves in godliness.

The word “train” carries the idea of discipline and exercise.

Just as the body needs training, spiritual life also needs discipline.

Bible reading, prayer, worship, confession, obedience, and service are not ways to “earn salvation.”

They are means through which a person who has received grace grows in the Holy Spirit.

Philippians 4:8 — Christians Should Pursue Excellent Character

8 Brothers and sisters, think about the things that are good and worthy of praise. Think about the things that are true and honorable and right and pure and beautiful and respected.

A Christian cannot say:

“As long as my doctrine is correct, my character does not matter.”

The Bible cares about our thoughts, character, and actions.

A person may know how to discuss theology, yet still be proud, angry, selfish, and dishonest.

That is not mature Christian life.

True theological knowledge should lead us to greater fear of God and greater humility.

Ephesians 2:8–10 — The Order Is Very Clear

8 I mean that you have been saved by grace through believing. You did not save yourselves; it was a gift from God.

9 It was not the result of your own efforts, so you cannot brag about it.

God has made us what we are. In Christ Jesus, God made us to do good works, which God planned in advance for us to live our lives doing.

These verses explain the whole issue very clearly.

First: Salvation is by grace.

Second: Salvation is not from works.

Third: Those who are saved are God’s workmanship.

Fourth: One purpose of God’s new creation in us is that we should do good works.

Not: good works → salvation.

Grace → faith → salvation → new life → good works.

Good works are not the root of salvation; they are the fruit of salvation.

James Explains Further: Faith Without Works Is Dead

James 2:17

In the same way, faith by itself, if it does not produce works, is dead.

James is not saying:

“Works plus faith earn salvation.”

He means:

“True faith necessarily produces fruit in a person’s life.”

Paul opposes:

justification by works.

James opposes:

a false faith that produces no works.

There is no contradiction between them.

Philippians 2:12–13 — Human Effort and God’s Work

这样看来,我亲爱的弟兄,你们既是常顺服的,不但我在你们那里,就是我如今不在你们那里,更是顺服的,就当恐惧战兢做成你们得救的工夫;

12 My dear friends, you have always obeyed God when I was with you. It is even more important that you obey now while I am away from you. Keep on working to complete your salvation with fear and trembling,

13 because God is working in you to help you want to do and be able to do what pleases him.

There is a very important balance here.

Christians really must make an effort.

Yet the power behind Christian effort still comes from God working within us.

Therefore, the Reformed doctrine of sanctification rejects both self-reliance and passivity.

We cannot say:

“I will make myself holy by my own willpower.”

Neither can we say:

“Since the Holy Spirit does everything, I do not need to do anything.”

The right attitude is:

“I will diligently pursue holiness because God is working within me.”

An Important Point to Explain

“If a person does good things, does that automatically make him a Christian?”

The answer is: No.

“If someone says he believes in Jesus but continues lying, cheating, being selfish, and hating others, with no desire to repent, is that normal?”

Again, the answer is: No.

Good fruit cannot turn a bad tree into a good tree; but a good tree should gradually produce good fruit.

17 In the same way, every good tree produces good fruit, but a bad tree produces bad fruit.

Salvation first changes the tree, and then the tree begins to bear fruit.

Reformed Summary

Good works do not earn eternal life for us.

Even our best works cannot obligate God to justify us.

However, true believers will produce the fruit of good works.

We are not saved by good works; we are saved for good works.

Good works are not the condition of salvation, but they are the necessary fruit of salvation.

Discussion Questions
Why can good character not justify a person before God?

If we are not saved by good works, why should we work hard to do good?

What does it mean that good works are the fruit of salvation?

Why does “depending completely on the Holy Spirit” not mean that Christians should make no effort?

In what specific area can we practice godliness this week?

Key Sentence for Tonight

It is not that God loves me more because I am becoming better. Rather, because God has shown me grace in Christ and the Holy Spirit lives in me, my life should increasingly be changed.
