Online Ministry, Family Responsibility, and True Repentance
I. First, My Central Conclusion
I believe what you truly need to repent of and change is not the fact that you did online ministry, but that you placed online ministry in the wrong position in your life.
These two things must be clearly distinguished.
If you do not distinguish them, you may easily move from one extreme to another.
The old extreme may have been: “Because this is ministry, what I am doing must be right.”
The new extreme may become: “Because my family has problems, everything I have done all these years was false and worthless, and I myself am simply a failure.”
Both conclusions are too simple.
A ministry can have real value while also containing wrong motives.
A person can truly have helped some people while also seriously neglecting his family responsibilities.
A person can have a real desire to serve God while also turning ministry into a tool for proving his own worth.
All of these things can exist at the same time.
II. First, We Must Distinguish Facts from Interpretations
Some things in your account are fairly clear facts.
You reduced your sleep over a long period in order to preserve more time for online ministry.
You wanted your children to work part-time, and one reason was that you did not want to devote more of your own time to earning money.
You told your wife that you only wanted to earn enough for your own living expenses and hoped to use the rest of your time for ministry and English.
The result was that your health worsened, your children felt pressure, and your wife lost her sense of security.
These are things you should seriously face now.
But some other statements, although they are truly what your family believes, are still judgments rather than objectively proven facts.
For example: “You have not truly helped anyone all these years.”
“No one will read the books you recommend.”
“There has been absolutely no fruit.”
These statements can accurately be recorded as your family’s judgment, but they do not automatically become proven facts simply because your family said them.
This distinction is extremely important.
Because you are now conducting a serious examination of yourself.
Self-examination must be honest, but honesty does not mean treating every harsh judgment as fact.
III. I Think Your Real Problem Goes Deeper Than Whether the Online Ministry Had Fruit
You have already touched the deepest issue yourself.
It is this:
“Why do I need online ministry so much?”
This is much more important than how many websites, contacts, or books you have.
From your own description, online ministry appears to have served at least three different functions.
First, it genuinely became a way through which you believed you could serve God and help people.
Second, it compensated for areas where you felt weak, such as interpersonal communication, language, and speaking ability.
Third, and most dangerously, it gradually became a place where you proved that you were “valuable.”
As this third function became stronger, online ministry was no longer merely ministry.
It began carrying a burden it was never meant to carry:
Proving your worth as a person.
Then you naturally become very afraid of losing it.
Because putting down online ministry is no longer merely “reducing one activity.”
It may feel like:
“What do I have left?”
“What use am I?”
“If I am not the person with tens of thousands of contacts, dozens of websites, and tens of thousands of books, who am I?”
I believe this is the deepest issue you need to deal with now.
IV. I Want to Be Very Careful with the Sentence, “I Am an Irresponsible Person”
You now say:
“I am an irresponsible person, a self-righteous person, and a person living in vanity.”
There are indeed things in this sentence that you should acknowledge.
From your own account, there were clear problems in how you prioritized your family responsibilities.
You also did use “this is ministry” to justify some of your choices.
You have also recognized that numbers, scale, other people’s needs, and the feeling that “I am serving many people” gave you a strong sense of worth.
These things are worthy of repentance.
But repentance and giving yourself a permanent identity sentence are two different things.
“I have acted irresponsibly in these matters” is not exactly the same as “I am an irresponsible person.”
The first points toward specific sin and specific change.
The second can easily become a sweeping judgment about your whole identity.
And sweeping self-condemnation often does not produce real change.
It may simply make a person suffer.
True repentance is very concrete.
It is not: “I am a terrible husband.”
It is: “I did not give my wife enough financial security, so I will change how I arrange my time and money.”
It is not: “I am a failed father.”
It is: “I transferred pressure created by my own choices onto my children, and I need to stop doing that.”
It is not: “My ministry was nothing but vanity.”
It is: “I acknowledge that vanity, self-proving, and avoidance of real responsibilities became mixed into my ministry, and I need to remove those things.”
The latter can actually change a life.
V. From a Biblical and Reformed Perspective, Where Did the Order Go Wrong?
There is a very serious biblical principle here.
Family responsibility is not a “worldly responsibility outside ministry.”
Family responsibility itself is part of God’s calling to you.
Work is too.
Providing for your household is too.
Taking care of your body so that you can sustain your responsibilities is also part of stewardship.
First Timothy 5:8 says that if someone does not provide for relatives, especially his own household, he has denied the faith.
First Timothy 3:4–5 even places managing one’s own household before caring for the church.
That order matters.
It means:
You cannot justify neglecting your own household by saying, “I want to serve more people.”
Jesus’ rebuke concerning “Corban” in Mark 7 reflects a similar principle.
A person cannot wrap a responsibility owed to his family in religious language and call it “given to God.”
This does not mean your situation is identical to the Corban situation.
But the warning is highly relevant to you.
Religious reasons can become tools for avoiding ordinary responsibilities.
The Reformed tradition strongly emphasizes vocation or calling.
God’s calling does not exist only in preaching, evangelism, building websites, or sharing books.
A husband who works, provides, keeps his commitments, and cares for his wife and children is also serving before God.
You may have treated “ministry” as highly spiritual and earning a living for your family as merely ordinary.
That may be exactly where the order became distorted.
VI. But I Also Disagree with the Opposite Extreme
You should not therefore conclude:
“Only earning money is a real responsibility, and all spiritual work online is worthless.”
That conclusion also lacks sufficient basis.
Whether an online ministry has value should not be determined simply by whether one’s family approves of it.
Nor should it be determined by the number of contacts.
Nor by the number of websites or books.
It should be judged by real fruit.
Do people come to you voluntarily for help?
Do people actually use the materials you organize?
Have people, through these materials, become more serious about Scripture, understood the gospel better, or left false teaching?
Do people tell you years later that these materials genuinely helped them?
Do mature pastors or churches recognize this service, rather than it being called “ministry” only by yourself?
These are the things that should actually be tested.
So your task now is not simply to “shut down the online ministry.”
而是:
Rather:
Separate it from your identity, vanity, and avoidance, and then test what it really is.
VII. I Recommend Reordering Your Life, Not Destroying It
You do not need to burn down the past twenty years in order to prove that you have repented.
What you need is reordering.
I believe you can begin in this order:
First, stop sacrificing sleep in order to gain ministry time.
If a form of “service” can only be sustained by damaging your body over time, then it is already unsustainable.
Reassume the financial responsibilities that belong to you as a husband and father.
Your goal can no longer simply be, “As long as I earn enough for my own expenses, that is enough.”
Marriage is not two financially independent strangers living under one roof.
Do not transfer the pressure created by your choice to earn less onto your children.
Adult children learning independence can be good, but it should be part of their growth, not a way to free more “ministry time” for their father.
Set clear boundaries around online ministry.
It should no longer be, “Do the minimum amount of paid work, then give everything else to ministry.”
It should become, “After family, work, health, and necessary responsibilities are properly handled, I serve within a defined amount of time.”
Reevaluate the so-called “online ministry” by its real fruit.
Do not count contacts, websites, or PDFs; count people genuinely helped, people who seek you out, people who continue to follow up, and fruit that can be recognized by the church.
Remove your sense of worth from online ministry.
Even if one day only one website remains, only one hundred contacts remain, or the work temporarily stops entirely, you still need to learn to answer: “Who am I if all of this is gone?”
This may be the deepest lesson before you now.
VIII. I Think Your Greatest Danger Now May No Longer Be Self-Justification, but Self-Destruction
In the past, you may have defended yourself too much.
Now you seem to be swinging toward the opposite direction.
You are beginning to summarize many years of your life as:
“I am simply irresponsible.”
“I am simply self-righteous.”
“I am simply vain.”
Part of this self-examination is real.
But if it continues unchecked, it can become another form of self-centeredness.
Before, it was:
“Look at how much I have done.”
Now it can become:
“Look at how terrible I am.”
On the surface they are opposites.
But both still keep “me” at the center.
Christian repentance is not endless staring at oneself.
It is seeing sin clearly, confessing it, turning from it, and then returning to the responsibilities God has placed before you.
IX. So, “After Laying Myself Open, What Comes Next?”
The answer is not to keep cutting deeper forever.
At some point, you must begin to sew the wound closed.
You have already seen some of the problems.
The next step is not to repeat every day, “I am an irresponsible person.”
It is to carry one more responsibility tomorrow.
It is not to prove every day, “My online ministry was false.”
It is to submit it to the tests of family responsibility, church accountability, time, and real fruit.
It is not to deny everything in your past.
It is to preserve what was real, repent of what was wrong, and end what was false.
I believe this is the road ahead of you.
And perhaps the most important sentence is this:
What you need to learn first is not how to become a greater “preacher,” but how to become a reliable husband, father, worker, and Christian.
If these ordinary responsibilities become stable again, and if your online ministry truly has God-given value, it may actually become cleaner, freer, and stronger afterward.
