Identity Before Mission
Yes. The power of that statement is not merely that “Jesus had done nothing,” but that it strikes directly at our need to prove ourselves by what we do.
Biblically, however, “He had done nothing” should be understood more precisely: before His baptism, Jesus had not yet begun His public ministry or performed the miracles, preaching, and healings recorded in the Gospels.
This does not mean that Jesus literally “did nothing” during His first thirty years.
He had always perfectly obeyed the Father, submitted to His earthly parents, and lived a holy and sinless life.
But before He publicly preached, healed the sick, cast out demons, or performed miracles, the Father had already publicly declared Him to be His beloved Son and expressed His delight in Him.
> “This is my Son, whom I love, and I am very pleased with him.” — NCV
Luke’s wording is even more direct:
> “You are my Son, whom I love, and I am very pleased with you.” — NCV
Why Is This So Important for You Right Now?
Because you have been examining one particular thing:
Have I been using “online ministry” to prove myself?
You could point to many things as evidence:
I have twenty or thirty thousand WeChat contacts.
I have built dozens of websites.
I have organized tens of thousands of books.
I sleep so little and still keep doing ministry.
I am not a good speaker, yet I still serve so many people.
These things can gradually become an unspoken sentence:
“See? I am valuable.”
Or even deeper:
“God, look—I am not a useless person.”
But the baptism of Jesus turns that entire logic upside down.
不是:
Not:
First achieve something → then become the beloved Son.
而是:
But:
You are my beloved Son → I delight in you → then the mission begins.
Identity comes before mission.
Love comes before achievement.
The Father’s delight comes before public ministry.
This Also Explains the Difference Between Proving Yourself and Serving
If the inner logic is:
“I must do these things to prove that I am a valuable Christian.”
Then the work will never end.
Ten thousand contacts will not be enough.
Thirty thousand will not be enough.
Ten websites will not be enough.
Fifty will not be enough.
Ten thousand books will not be enough.
Fifty thousand will not be enough.
Because what you are really trying to fill is not merely other people’s need, but a hole inside yourself.
So you become more and more exhausted.
And it becomes harder and harder to stop.
Because when you stop, the question returns:
“If I do nothing, do I still have value?”
The Gospel Gives a Completely Different Order
For a Christian, it is not:
Service → identity.
而是:
It is:
Receive your identity in Christ → therefore serve.
不是:
Not:
“I serve so many people, therefore God should be pleased with me.”
而是:
But:
“I have received grace and acceptance in Christ, so even if no one sees me, I can faithfully do what I am called to do today.”
Then ministry becomes free.
If people notice, I can serve.
If no one notices, I can still serve.
If ten thousand people use the resources, I thank God.
If only one person is truly helped, I can still thank God.
If my family presently needs me to reduce the work, I can stop for a season.
Because my identity does not disappear when a website closes.
But There Is an Important Reformed Theological Qualification
We should not simply conclude from Jesus’ baptism:
“People do not need to do anything; God is pleased with everyone anyway.”
That is not what the text means.
Jesus is the eternal Son, and He has always been loved by the Father.
He is also completely sinless and perfectly obedient.
So when the Father says, “I am pleased with you,” this is first a unique declaration of the Father concerning the Son.
We sinners are accepted by God not because we naturally please Him as Jesus does, but because through faith we are united to Christ.
This is the Reformed doctrine of justification.
Not because:
“I did enough ministry.”
Not because:
“I fasted enough.”
Not because:
“I sacrificed enough.”
Not even because:
“I repented thoroughly enough.”
It is because Christ’s righteousness is credited to me, and I receive it through faith alone.
This May Touch One of the Deepest Places in Your Life
Some people grow up with an inner sense that says:
“I must be useful before others will affirm me.”
Then that same pattern can enter their faith.
It becomes:
“I must do many things for God to prove that I am not a failure.”
At that point, a person can be extremely zealous.
He can evangelize every day.
He can build websites.
He can distribute books.
He can sacrifice sleep.
He can even sacrifice family life.
But deep down, what is driving him may no longer be simply:
“Christ loves me, therefore I want to serve Him.”
而是:
But instead:
“I must keep serving, otherwise I do not know who I am.”
Outwardly, these two can look almost identical.
So This May Become a Sentence for Your New Beginning
