The Complete Redemption of Christ’s Blood and the Perseverance of the Saints

2026-08-15

Statement of Faith

We believe that the blood of the Lord Jesus, shed on the cross, accomplished complete redemption.

His blood can cleanse believers from all sin and give us forgiveness in Christ.

Those who are truly saved are kept by God to the end; but this “eternal security” never gives us permission to continue in sin.

The Holy Spirit lives forever in true believers. Therefore, although believers may still be weak, fall, and even be caught in sin for a time, they will not remain peacefully in sin forever without repentance.

II. Christ’s Blood Gives Us Redemption

English (NCV)

“In Christ we are set free by the blood of his death, and so we have forgiveness of sins. How rich is God’s grace.”

说明|Explanation

Our forgiveness does not come because our works are good enough. It comes because Christ has already paid the price.

The foundation of salvation is not “How well did I do today?” but “What has Christ already done for me?”

English (NCV)

“And through Christ, God has brought all things back to himself again—things on earth and things in heaven. God made peace through the blood of Christ’s death on the cross.”

说明|Explanation

Sin separates people from God, but the cross of Christ brings peace.

Therefore, our reconciliation with God is based not on human merit but on Christ’s work of shedding his blood and giving his life.

III. Christ’s Redemption Is Sufficient to Cleanse Us from All Sin

English (NCV)

“My dear children, I write this letter to you so you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have a helper in the presence of the Father—Jesus Christ, the One who does what is right. He died in our place to take away our sins, and not only our sins but the sins of all people.”

说明|Explanation

John holds two truths together: Do not sin; but if we sin, we have Christ as our advocate.

Therefore, the gospel is against both despair and sinful license.

After falling into sin, a Christian should not say, “I am finished. God will never accept me again.”

But neither should we say, “Jesus has forgiven me anyway, so I can continue sinning.”

English (NCV)

“If we say we have no sin, we are fooling ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, he will forgive our sins, because we can trust God to do what is right. He will cleanse us from all the wrongs we have done.”

说明|Explanation

A true Christian is not a person who never sins again, but a person who continually confesses, repents, and returns to Christ.

IV. God Will Keep His Chosen People to the End

English (NCV)

“God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son so that whoever believes in him may not be lost, but have eternal life.”

说明|Explanation

The life Christ gives believers is not temporary life but eternal life.

English (NCV)

“The Father gives me the people who are mine. Every one of them will come to me, and I will always accept them. I came down from heaven to do what God wants me to do, not what I want to do. Here is what the One who sent me wants me to do: I must not lose even one whom God gave me, but I must raise them all on the last day. Those who see the Son and believe in him have eternal life, and I will raise them on the last day. This is what my Father wants.”

说明|Explanation

This is an important biblical foundation for the Reformed doctrine of the perseverance of the saints.

Our final security does not rest on whether “I can hold on tightly enough to Christ,” but on this truth: Christ will not lose those whom the Father has given him.

English (NCV)

“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never die, and no one can steal them out of my hand. My Father gave my sheep to me. He is greater than all, and no person can steal my sheep out of my Father’s hand.”

说明|Explanation

Notice that the passage does not merely say that the sheep will not leave. It says that Christ and the Father personally keep them.

Therefore, the more precise Reformed expression is not simply “once saved, always saved,” but:

God causes those who are truly regenerated to persevere to the end, and he personally preserves them to the end.

V. The Holy Spirit Lives Forever in True Believers

English (NCV)

“I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper to be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it does not see him or know him. But you know him, because he lives with you and he will be in you.”

说明|Explanation

The Holy Spirit is not a temporary visitor in the Christian. He remains with believers forever.

Therefore, a truly regenerated person cannot remain forever at peace with sin.

VI. Salvation Is Not a License to Sin

English (NCV)

“So if we say we have fellowship with God, but we continue living in darkness, we are liars and do not follow the truth. But if we live in the light, as God is in the light, we can share fellowship with each other. Then the blood of Jesus, God’s Son, cleanses us from every sin.”

说明|Explanation

There is an important distinction here: committing a sin and walking in darkness are not exactly the same thing.

A Christian may still sin, but cannot make darkness his home.

VII. A Regenerated Person Cannot Remain at Home in Sin

English (NCV)

“Dear children, do not let anyone lead you the wrong way. Christ is righteous. So to be like Christ a person must do what is right. The devil has been sinning since the beginning, so anyone who continues to sin belongs to the devil. The Son of God came for this purpose: to destroy the devil’s work. Those who are God’s children do not continue sinning, because the new life from God remains in them. They are not able to go on sinning, because they have become children of God. So we can see who God’s children are and who the devil’s children are: Those who do not do what is right are not God’s children, and those who do not love their brothers and sisters are not God’s children.”

A Very Important Explanation

“Cannot sin” here does not mean that a regenerated Christian becomes completely sinless.

Earlier in the same letter, John has already said:

“If we say we have no sin, we are fooling ourselves.” (1 John 1:8)

Therefore, the point of 1 John 3 is: A person born of God cannot continue to make sin his normal way of life.

He may fall, but he cannot peacefully remain there.

He may sin, but the Holy Spirit will convict and enlighten him, bringing him again to repentance and back to God.

VIII. Another Very Important Passage Should Be Added

6:1–4|Romans 6:1–4

Explanation

Paul directly rejects a false conclusion:

“Since grace is so great, it does not matter if I continue sinning.”

Paul’s answer is: Absolutely not!

True salvation brings not only justification, but also necessarily begins sanctification.

IX. The Reformed Understanding: Salvation Does Not Mean Freedom to Sin

Those whom God has accepted, effectually called, and sanctified by his Spirit cannot totally or finally fall away from the state of grace; they will persevere to the end and be eternally saved.

First, saints may fall seriously.

Second, saints will not finally and completely abandon Christ.

X. Main Summary for Tonight’s Bible Study

Christ’s blood is sufficient to cleanse us from all our sins.

True salvation is accomplished by God and preserved by God to the end.

Therefore, a truly regenerated person will not finally lose salvation.

But eternal security never means that we may continue forever in sin without repentance.

True believers may still be weak, fall, and even commit serious sins.

But the Holy Spirit lives in them, so they cannot remain peacefully in sin forever.

True perseverance is not “I keep myself to the end,” but “God keeps me and causes me to persevere to the end.”

A true Christian is not someone who never falls, but someone cleansed by Christ’s blood, indwelt by the Holy Spirit, and kept by the Father, so that after falling, God brings him back to repentance and causes him to persevere to the end.
