Lesson 27: Evangelism and the Great Commission
Statement of Faith
We believe that every Christian should share the gospel and seek to lead people to Christ.
But we also believe that the Holy Spirit lives in everyone who is born again and saved. Therefore, believers should live as witnesses of Christ, show the power of the gospel, influence life through life, multiply life, nurture life, and share the life they have received.
III. Live Out the Life of Christ
Colossians 3:3–4
3:3
English:
For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
3:4
English:
When Christ, our life, is revealed, then you will also be revealed with him in glory.
Short Explanation
“Christ is our life.”
Christianity is not only accepting a set of correct doctrines.
It is not only taking part in religious activities.
Regeneration means that we have received new life from Christ.
Therefore, true gospel witness is first about life, not performance.
IV. Shine in a Dark World
English:
that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without defect in the middle of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you are seen as lights in the world,
2:16
English:
holding up the word of life, that I may have something to boast in the day of Christ that I didn’t run in vain nor labor in vain.
Short Explanation
First, live a holy life.
Second, hold out the word of life.
This shows that Christian witness cannot have only one of these.
A good life without the gospel message is not enough.
Speaking the gospel without a life that matches it can also damage our witness.
Proclaim the gospel with our mouths and confirm it with our lives.
V. Life Influences Life — The Aroma of Christ
2 Corinthians 2:14
English:
Now thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and reveals through us the sweet aroma of his knowledge in every place.
Short Explanation
Paul uses the picture of an aroma here.
An aroma naturally spreads.
In the same way, a person who truly knows Christ should gradually influence people around him.
Our family should first be a place where we witness for Christ.
Then comes our church, friends, coworkers, neighbors, and people we meet in daily life.
VI. A Grain of Wheat — Life Produces Life
English:
Most certainly I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains by itself alone. But if it dies, it bears much fruit.
Short Explanation
This verse first points to Christ’s own death.
Through his death, Christ brings life to many.
Self-denial produces fruit.
We must be willing to pay a cost if we truly want to serve others.
Spiritual multiplication is not merely passing on knowledge.
It is a life changed by grace becoming a blessing to another life in God’s hands.
VII. Nurture Life — New Believers Need to Grow
1 Corinthians 3:2
English:
I fed you with milk, not with meat; for you weren’t yet ready. Indeed, you aren’t ready even now.
Short Explanation
A baby cannot be left without food after birth.
In the same way, after a person believes in Christ, he or she needs spiritual nourishment.
“He has made a decision, so my job is finished.”
The Bible calls us to continue helping people grow as disciples.
1 Thessalonians 2:7
English:
But we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother cherishes her own children.
Short Explanation
This is a very warm picture of ministry.
True spiritual care is not only teaching from a pulpit.
Paul says he cared for believers like a mother nursing her children.
Patience.
Gentleness.
Walking with people.
Sacrifice.
Long-term care.
True discipleship is not like a factory producing products.
It is one life walking with another life.
VIII. Share the Life We Have Received
English:
The life was revealed, and we have seen, and testify, and declare to you the life, the eternal life, which was with the Father and was revealed to us.
Short Explanation
“We give you some religious knowledge.”
“We declare to you the eternal life.”
Of course, a human being cannot give eternal life to another person.
God is the one who gives life.
But God uses people who already know Christ to proclaim Christ to those who do not yet know him.
IX. The Important Connection Between Statements 26 and 27
Statement 26 emphasizes: our gifts are different.
Statement 27 emphasizes: our lives must become a witness.
The First Extreme:
“I do not have the gift of evangelism, so evangelism has nothing to do with me.”
This is wrong.
Not everyone is a full-time preacher, but every Christian is a witness of Christ.
The Second Extreme:
“As long as I preach the gospel, it does not matter how I live.”
This is also wrong.
The gospel must be proclaimed by our words and witnessed by our lives.
X. Several Important Doctrinal Balances
First, gifts come from grace, not from human merit.
Second, gifts are different, but no true member of Christ’s body is useless.
Third, the Great Commission is not the private task of a small group of “ministers.”
Fourth, the fruit of evangelism finally comes from the Holy Spirit, not from human eloquence.
Fifth, evangelism cannot be separated from holy living.
Sixth, leading someone to faith is not the end. Making disciples is the full goal of the Great Commission.
XI. Family Bible Study Application
What gifts has God given me?
Am I actually using these gifts to serve others?
Have I wrongly thought that the Great Commission is only for pastors or missionaries?
Can my family see the power of the gospel in my life?
Do my words and my life agree with each other?
Do I only care about getting people to “make a decision,” without caring about their spiritual growth afterward?
Whose spiritual life am I nurturing, walking with, and helping to grow right now?
XII. Two Sentences to Remember Tonight
Our gifts are different, but every believer has a part in the Great Commission.
The gospel should not only go out from our mouths; it should also be lived out through our lives.
Christians do not all serve in the same way, but all are members of the body of Christ. We do not all have the same gifts, but all are called to take part in the Great Commission. We do not all preach from a pulpit, but all should proclaim Christ with our words, witness to Christ with our lives, and help those who have received new life grow as disciples of the Lord.
