Saving Faith Is God’s Grace and Renews the Whole Person
Core Statement
We believe that saving faith comes from the grace of God (Eph. 2:8; John 15:16; Acts 3:16; Acts 5:31; 2 Pet. 1:1). It does not come from human reason, feelings, or will (1 Cor. 2:14).
But we also believe that a true believer should not be careless in the mind, with only a shallow understanding of truth (Eph. 5:17); careless in the heart, being cold or lukewarm toward Christ (Rev. 2:4; 3:15–16); or careless in the will, treating commitment to Christ as optional (Rom. 12:1–2).
One-Sentence Summary
Faith comes completely from God, but true faith given by God will surely produce fruit in us.
These are two truths that Reformed theology holds together:
We are not saved because we seek God seriously; we are saved by grace, and therefore we begin to seek God seriously.
II. The Source of Faith: Not Man, but God
English (simple rendering):
You are saved by grace through faith. This does not come from yourselves; it is God’s gift.
解释|Explanation
Salvation does not begin with man’s decision. It begins with God’s grace.
A person does not first produce a faith that deserves God’s reward, and then God saves him because of that faith.
Even our coming to Christ and believing in him is the result of God’s gracious work.
Grace is not a reward for faith; faith is the instrument by which we receive grace.
III. We Did Not First Choose Christ; Christ First Chose Us
English (simple rendering):
You did not choose me; I chose you. I appointed you to go and bear lasting fruit.
解释|Explanation
Jesus first spoke these words to his apostles, so we should not remove them from their context.
God’s grace comes first; man’s response comes after.
Election is not meant to leave a person living a fruitless life.
“I chose you” — this is grace.
“Go and bear fruit” — this is the result of grace.
“Since God chose me, I can live any way I want.”
Those whom God chooses are also changed by God and begin to bear fruit.
IV. Even Faith in Christ Comes from Christ
Peter explained that the lame man was not healed by the apostles’ own power.
The focus is the name of Christ and faith in Christ.
Peter gives the glory completely to Christ.
Spiritual Principle
“God provides salvation, and I provide faith, so we each do our part.”
The Bible gives the glory for salvation much more completely to God’s grace.
V. Repentance Is Also Given by God
English (simple rendering):
God exalted Jesus as Prince and Savior, to give repentance and forgiveness of sins.
解释|Explanation
Not only forgiveness comes from God; repentance itself is connected with God’s gracious work.
“I repented because I am wiser than other people.”
“Without God’s mercy, I would still be living in sin.”
This produces humility, not spiritual pride.
VI. We Receive the Same Precious Faith
English (simple rendering):
Peter writes to those who have received the same precious faith through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ.
解释|Explanation
Peter emphasizes that believers have received this precious faith.
Faith is not something we can boast about before God.
What makes us righteous before God is Christ’s righteousness, not how impressive our faith is.
A weak hand that truly holds a strong Christ can still be saved.
The power of salvation is in Christ, not in the strength of our faith.
VII. Why Can’t Natural Man Know God by His Own Reason?
English (simple rendering):
A natural person does not accept the things of God’s Spirit. They seem foolish to him, and he cannot truly understand them because they must be spiritually discerned.
Reformed Emphasis
This does not mean unbelievers have no intelligence.
An unbeliever can be very intelligent.
He may study mathematics, medicine, history, philosophy, and even the original languages of the Bible.
The problem is not IQ; the problem is man’s spiritual nature.
Mind
Affections
Will
This is what Reformed theology calls Total Depravity.
It does not mean every person is as evil as he could possibly be.
Sin has affected the whole person, so man cannot come to Christ by his own power.
VIII. But Grace Does Not Leave the Mind Careless
English (simple rendering):
Do not be foolish. Understand what the Lord wants you to do.
解释|Explanation
我们不是靠明白真理得救;
We are not saved because we understand truth well;
But after salvation, we should increasingly desire to understand the truth.
“Theology is not important. I only need to love Jesus.”
If you do not know who Jesus is, how do you know which Jesus you love?
Therefore, true faith increasingly values Scripture.
IX. Grace Also Changes Our Affections
2:4|Revelation 2:4
English (simple rendering):
But I have this against you: you have left the love you had at first.
This deserves serious thought in family Bible study.
The Ephesian church did not completely lack truth.
In fact, they were serious about doctrinal discernment.
But sound doctrine cannot become an excuse for losing our love for Christ.
A correct mind does not automatically mean a healthy spiritual life.
X. Christ Rejects Lukewarm Christianity
3:15–16|Revelation 3:15–16
English (simple rendering):
Christ says that he knows their works. They are neither cold nor hot. Because they are lukewarm, he warns that he will reject their complacent condition.
This Does Not Mean
“If you are not a zealous Christian, it is better to oppose Christ completely.”
The point is the self-satisfied, self-sufficient, spiritually numb condition of the Laodicean church.
attend church,
join Bible study,
know much doctrine,
even hold Reformed theology,
yet gradually lose love for Christ himself.
This is very dangerous.
XI. Grace Also Changes the Will
12:1–2|Romans 12:1–2
English (simple rendering):
Because of God’s mercy, believers should offer their whole lives to God as living sacrifices. They should not follow the pattern of this world, but should be transformed by the renewing of their minds so that they may know and follow God’s good will.
Notice Paul’s order.
“First give yourself completely to God, and then God will have mercy on you.”
“Because God has already shown you mercy, offer yourself to God.”
Grace → Faith → Renewal → Commitment → Obedience.
Commitment → Obedience → Deserving grace → Salvation.
XII. The Gospel Renews Mind, Affections, and Will
I want to understand God’s Word more.
I want to love Christ more.
I want to give myself more fully to Christ.
These three should not be separated.
Knowledge without love can become cold orthodoxy.
Emotion without truth can become blind religious excitement.
Will and action without the gospel can become legalism.
Truth enters the mind, Christ captures the affections, and grace submits the will to God.
XIII. An Important Reformed Balance
First error: Man’s free will saves himself.
Scripture rejects this. Salvation is grace from beginning to end.
Second error: Since everything is grace, man does not need to care about anything.
Scripture also rejects this.
God’s grace not only forgives us; it also changes us.
Family Discussion Questions
Why can my faith never become a reason to boast before God?
If faith is God’s gift, does that mean I do not need to read the Bible, pray, or seek God? Why?
What may be wrong if a person knows much theology but does not love Christ?
What is the danger if a person is very emotional and enthusiastic but does not care about biblical truth?
Why does Romans 12:1 speak first about God’s mercy and then tell us to offer our bodies?
Where do I most need to grow now: my mind, my affections, or my will?
Simple Summary for Children
I do not believe in Jesus because I am smarter than others.
I do not choose Jesus because I am better than others.
God first loves me, seeks me, and gives me grace.
But if God has truly changed me, I will want to know Jesus more.
I will love Jesus more.
I will become more willing to obey Jesus.
We are not saved by being serious; after we are saved by grace, we begin to take God seriously.
This captures the heart of Article 4: Grace alone does not produce careless Christians; true grace renews the mind, the affections, and the will.
